VEZELAY - on the Pilgrim's Walk

All my own photographs.

Vézelay is a commune in the Yonne

 department in Burgundy in north-central France.

It is a defendable hill town famous for Vézelay Abbey.

 The town and the Basilica of St Magdelene

 are designated UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Imbedded into the road up to the Abbey
are these bronze Coquille St Jacques (scallops)

they signify that we are at

the beginning of the pilgrim's walk called

'The way of Saint James'

The walk ends in Santiago de Compostela in Spain

a distance of 678 miles!

We visited Vezelay as part of my

granddaughter's school trip.

Travelling by bus from their village

was a fun two hour trip.
Listening to their excited non stop chatter
and the singing of french songs with hand actions too.
(much too complicated for me to join in)!

Many young Kiwi's from New Zealand
join the Europeans to make this walk

 during the summer months -

as part of their OE.

Permanent residents of Vezelay in the main are
artisans with their ateliers on the road
leading to the Abbey.
It was fascinating to watch them working at their craft.

GREY DEY CHRISTMAS INSPRATION

 Simple and stylish decorations

are what I love for this special season.

I have wonderful memories

of Christmas when I was growing up.

Times were tough back then

but our mother still made it

a very special time.

 

We all had fun decorating the house.

We made  red, white and green

crepe paper streamers

which covered the entire kitchen ceiling.

It was simple

but I remember thinking how magical it looked!

I'm more of the 'less is more' decorator.

We have a small tree quite simply decorated.

The Centre of CHRISTMAS

Hello dear friends

everywhere 

I'm seeing signs of CHRISTMAS approaching.

So far, I've brought my box of decorations

down from the attic

but I still have to find a tree

to hang them on.

I found this sweet angel decoration last year.

She is heralding the arrival

of the centre of

this wonderful celebration.

the CHRIST child

is the centre of

CHRISTMAS.

let's all remember that.

It's wonderful to decorate

and I use the same decorations

I've had for 43 years.

Some were made by my children

when they were little kindy kids

and I love the memories they evoke.

This little star with bells

is my new decoration for this year...

We have been away for a few days

so I'm running late...

My heart skipped beats.....

~ A magical gift ~

Hello dear friends!

As the title of this post says

"my heart skipped beats"

the day I received a wonderful parcel from

my dear blogging friend

Mary.

I have followed her lovely blog

A Breath of Fresh Air

for a few years.

She writes about her home and garden,

 her amazing travel exploits

often to quite remote destinations

An exquisite grey heart

and also about her visits

to antiquey shops/flea markety places

you know what I mean!!!

I've always wanted some fairy dust!

I left a comment on one of those posts

which sparked an idea for Mary

and the result was

this beautiful gift she sent me

quite out of the blue!
