Views of Auckland Waterfront

With the lovely weather over Easter
we visited the waterfront and viaduct harbour.
There were a few clouds about
but with the temperature at 28°C
we had an enjoyable walk.

It's now early Autumn and in a month or two
the days will start to draw in.
This weekend on Sunday 3rd April
Daylight Saving finishes.......
I'm thankful for such a magnificent summer
it has truly been one out of the box!

The Louis Vuitton Cup

The Louis Vuitton Cup

was won by New Zealand on three occasions.

This yachting cup 

decided who would be the challenger for

the Americas Cup yacht race.

I took this photo back in 2013 at

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron

where it was proudly on display

in the trophy room.

My husband was a very keen yachtie

and has been a member of the club for over 40 years.

I snapped this photo on the same day.

It is the Roll of Honour of members

who lost their lives in

World War 1 and World War 2.

1st place Fastnet 89

1st place Whitbread 89-90

1st place Europe Tour UAP

1st place World Circuit

1st place Boston – New York

Messing about in boats

Last Saturday was Auckland Anniversary day
a holiday celebrating my beautiful city on the water.

Each year there is a yachting regatta on the harbour
The first regatta was held in 1842
so this year was the 174th
Anniversary Day Regatta.

Children learn to swim at a very early age in New Zealand
and it's wonderful to see the young ones
join the regatta in their little sailing dinghies.

There's even a fun race for
 the hard working tugboats

A Royal New Zealand Naval frigate
was one of the mark boats for the racing yachts.

The sun was shining 
and there was a reasonable breeze
making for great sailing conditions
just what Ratty and Mole would love!

STORMY WEATHER - PERSONAL PHOTO CHALLENGE

I took these photos a couple of years ago
on a stormy, windy day.
We went out to meet the Volvo Race boats
as they entered the Waitemata harbour.

We've had only one major storm in the last week
but it was at night - consequently no photos.
If I hadn't been working the next day
I would have driven down to the
waterfront where I'm sure there would have been
all sorts of debris to photograph!

My camera is a basic “Point and Shoot”

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS3 with a Leica lens.

The Royals Auckland Harbour - Day Three

Our Royals flew from Wellington to Auckland

on an RNZAF Air Force plane

for some action and adventure pursuits.

They met Air Force families

at Hobsonville Air Base.

Then on to Auckland City

to board two previous

America's Cup racing yachts

for some fun match racing on the harbour! 

 My embroidery friend Mary

invited us for lunch today to see

the Royals at play!

Mary's apartment on Princes Wharf

was the perfect vantage point to see all the action!

Mary's three little granddaughters waiting to see Princess Kate in her tiara!!!

Wonderful to hear you're all enjoying

my snippets on our beautiful Royal family!

The baby stays at Government House

in Wellington and his parents

fly back to be with him each evening.

We've heard from a reliable source

that Prince William gives Prince George

his bottle in the evening......

he's just a normal dad like thousands

of others the world over.... awww!!!

VOLVO OCEAN RACE

A week ago today

we went out on the harbour

to welcome the

yachts arriving in Auckland

on the 4th leg of the

Volvo Round the World Yacht Race!

Camper is the New Zealand

entrant in this amazing race.

They had sailed from China

non-stop for 20 days

The crews must have been beyond tired

and looking forward to stepping

on to dry land

with the prospect of a warm bed

and dry clothes

Their families had flown in several

days before and were waiting

in the Viaduct Basin.

It was a very blustery day,

raining off and on

but that didn't matter...

we were just happy to be part

of the excitement and see

all the boats arrive here safely.

In the calmer waters of the

inner harbour Camper

is reunited

with her shore support team.

Home at last but only

for one week, as the fifth leg

of their journey started today.

They deaprted this afternoon

bound for Brazil via Cape Horn

which yachties call

'the Everest of yachting'.

On the way back to the marina

we passed this massive boat.

An overseas supporter of the race,

even if I won Lotto

(which has reached $20million here)

I still couldn't afford to run it!!!!

C'est la vie.....
