A home needs books...

If you are a regular visitor
to my blog you will know I'm a
book lover.
I've also been lucky to inherit
some lovely old books from
my father
a very dear bookish man!

Like this five volume set of
The History of England
by
Lord Macaulay
published in London in
1870.

Do you know, that while taking
photographs for this post
I was leafing through the pages
and to my surprise I became
totally absorbed.
So I've started reading Volume I,
I love history
 but I had thought
this tome would be too stuffy!
I'll let you know how I get on...

The covers of the books are old leather
and the pages are edged with
gold leaf.

"A room without
books is like a body
without a soul."
Cicero

  7. Dear Shane, I also so love old leather bound books, and having gold edged pages, makes them so mush more beautiful... if then also,--like your Lord Macaulay books-the words welcome you and keep you staying reading,- they are even dearer to me.
You have the extra beauty, that they belonged to your father!
    How wonderful for you.

  8. Exquisite! I hope that you find the history books a fascinating read. One thing is certain, the history is closer to the real deal than if read from a current history text.

  9. Hello Dear Shane
What a stunning collection inherited from your father! - It is good to see you reading them. Often we don't make the time to really appreciate these wonderful works. These are precious with leather covers and gold leaf binding and I know how much they mean to you!
Life has been full on here too but you are in my thoughts!
Have a lovely weekend coming up.
    Be in touch soon!
    Sending big hugs,
    Suzy

  12. Oh Shane, what beautiful old books they are! The crumbling leather, the fly-specked pages -- they all speak to me. But the knowledge that they come to you from your father makes them extra special! Thanks so much for contributing to Thursday's Inspiration. xoxo

  13. Your books are beautiful, and beautifully photographed. I agree, every house needs books. I've been in some homes where there are none and the rooms look soulless.

  14. That's a beautiful book and that last image is really, really lovely! I know what you mean, sometimes old books (especially that contain the word 'history' in them) appear to be so dry but, lo and behold, occasionally, I discover that they're really time machines! ;) Good luck with it all. I'm sure you'll be edified with whatever you gobble up from it! =]

    Best wishes!

When we downsized to our little cottage, I had no place to put my books and I felt something was missing until I could add bookcases.
